Imagine that Funny article today, Which Is Buggier - Windows or Linux?. Funny not because it reaches any real conclusions about the question, but funny in that the conclusion it does reach is "it depends". It depends on what you're using the PC for, who's using it, what sort of environment you're working in, and about a zillion other factors. No really, you mean different OS'es are better for different people in different environments? Who woulda thunk? *L* In all seriousness, those of you traveling this weekend, be safe out there, and everyone take a moment sometime to remember those who have fallen in defense of our freedom to use different operating systems, among our many freedoms. I've had to do that, and it sucks. I work in a small office, 24 employees total, so not only are you dealing with something that hits all of them hard, you have to know about it, and sneak around doing some "out of the ordinary" things without telling anyone about it. You also have to get in and get out quickly. Any delay in getting the disconnect done and you could be sitting at their desk when they get finished being fired and come back to collect their things, and that's not going to be a comfortable situation! No, it's certainly not something I relish having to do again someday. But I suppose it'll happen, eventually. I'm tired of it.. Moving on from commenting problems, because, frankly, I'm a little sick of looking at them. :) Lots of work stuff to do today, probably light blogging. We're getting close to our event, we have a walk through at the theater this afternoon, I need to pay extra special attention to where the electrical outlets are in relation to the registration area. I'd hate to send them over there without the proper extensions cords, and I doubt anyone else has bothered to think about tech details like that. I also need to make sure by the end of this week that I have the proper drivers installed on the laptop for the printer they are taking over there, and that the person lugging this stuff over there knows how to set it up. I'm not going to be there at that time, I'll be chauffeuring some of our board members, to get them over to the board luncheon event before the theater portion of the event. (Yeah it's confusing..) That's the price I pay for owning an SUV. ;) Most of my weekend, provided I don't get any frantic phone calls from the office, will be spent preparing my personal tech stuff for us to go on vacation next weekend. We're driving to Chattanooga, with a day trip to Atlanta on Sunday. There's lots of Pocket Streets maps that need to be downloaded to the Axim, local ISP numbers that need to be saved to the laptop, drivers for the Lexar multi-card reader to be installed on the laptop so we can use both digital cameras and unload pictures to the laptop using CF and SD cards, and I need to maybe find a camera bag that has enough space to hold 2 cameras, a Pocket PC, 3 small compartments to hold the lenses so they don't get scratched by each other or other things in the bag, and spare rechargeable batteries. If it could also hold my cell phone that would be a plus, but not a necessity. :) So the question is, which takes more tech planning, the annual meeting at work, or Angela and I going on a 4 day vacation? It's a close call... Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark| Wednesday, May 21, 2003
Alternatives Convinced that maybe Access just plain isn't going to support 18 digit blogid's, I did try a couple of new commenting systems with the new blogger version while I ate my lunch. CGIcomments completely didn't work. Again, probably it's handling the blog_id as a number and choking on 18 digits. xcomments worked, sort of. I can read and write comments, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out why the comment count doesn't work. Since the creators of xcomments simply left the zip file and no documentation, it's a bit hard to really get through why that might be. I'm trying now to find someone, anyone, who is using xcomments successfully and has a comment counter. I haven't found one yet! :) By the way, the comment count is not related to the digits problem, as it doesn't work on new blogs or old blogs with the shorter BlogItemNumber. There's something else that I'm missing. Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark| Failed inspiration I had a sudden thought this morning in the shower about the comments. The sudden realization that I had put the link to the comments BlogItemNumber in quotes so it would look for a string instead of a number but I hadn't put the quotes around the second part of the comments code where that same tag shows up. Maybe that was causing the errors? I hurriedly finished my shower, did a hack job of shaving, rushed in to work, fixed that, tried it and... There's still an internal server error when I try to use the blogid as text in the database. Grr. I'll get back at that later, I have invoices to produce right at the moment. I'm open to any suggestions, although I'm getting more and more convinced that we've simply hit a limitation of Access and/or ASP. Excuse the mess See Andy's post here. More details on aspcomments handling of 18 digit blog id's. I'm going to be messing with the comments for a few, switching the field to text from long integer, you might not want to leave any comments for the moment. :) Update 1: Andy's permalinks don't seem to be working, look for the second post under the date May 20 on the homepage for now. (Ugh, blogger!!!!) Update 2: Comments are back, I created a test blog on the new blogger version to use to figure out what to do with the comments, since switching the blogid field to text did not work, at all. I assume I need to switch it to text and change something in the ASP code to accommodate the change, since it gives me an HTTP 500 error. But my limited ASP skills will have me searching for that one for awhile. (Double ugh blogger!!!!) Later yesterday, after I posted that stuff, I discovered that someone had thrown a rock and broken one of the windows on the second floor of our office building. The window is in an empty office so no one noticed it until I went in looking for a spare mouse. Let's see, next week we have a highly publicized, internationally known speaker giving the keynote at our annual meeting, and this week we have someone throwing rocks at our building? I hope the events aren't related... And no, I'm not going to tell you who the speaker is, that would give away where I work! Besides I won't be getting to meet him or listen to him speak, since I'll be transporting equipment and materials from the area of the keynote to the area for the reception or back to our office. (I get to do all the heavy lifting while everyone else gets to listen to the speech and then attend the reception. Don't feel sorry, I volunteered in exchange for a half day off!!!) The only real downside to the whole process for me is that while Angela is off visiting her folks over the long holiday weekend, I have to stay in town and be on call because there will be people in the office over the weekend. I guess it could be worse, I could be them and have to actually work instead of just being on call. *L* Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark| Monday, May 19, 2003
Playing with photos While searching for a cheap digital camera to buy for my nephew's birthday, I stumbled onto this site, which sells digital camera accessories. I followed the link to the Tiffen lens compatibility chart. I was excited that they had lenses for the HP 318 so I ordered them and they showed up today! Angela and I went out this evening to test the new lenses. Here's an example of each lens: Wide-angle:

Here's the omens: I was greeted by a fellow employee's questions about his home computer first thing this morning. Really, FIRST thing. Before I had even gotten to my office, let alone turned on my computer. Literally while I was walking down the hall with my laptop bag over my shoulder and key to my office in my hand, this person was hitting me with computer questions. Then, when I finally did settle into my office and turn my PC on, I was greeted by an email with a .pif attachment claiming to be from support@microsoft.com. Nice try, but I'll be deleting that. Let's hope anyone else in the building who got it did the same... I'm ready to go back to bed. Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark| Sunday, May 18, 2003
Possible Comment Issue with New Blogger See Phil's post here. If you use comments in Blogger that incorporate javascript, you might want to be aware of this little change that needs to be made to your commenting system when your blog gets switched over to the new version of blogger. I did it with my copy of aspcomments on this blog and it seems to be working as fine with the quotes as it ever has. Hopefully there won't be any problems this way when this blog does get switched but we'll find out for sure when it happens! :) Good catch, Phil!
