Apologies

Apparently, the switch over to the new version of Blogger also kicked out a bunch of emails to the subscription list. As far as I can tell all the emails that didn't get sent out while BloggerPro was having some issues in late May-early June are all being sent out now. I'm sorry for cramming your inbox, but I don't have much control over it, consider it getting caught up on all the messages you missed earlier, all at once. :)

Change over

Looks like Blogger switched me over to their new system this evening. I am now checking to make sure everything works, please let me know if you find something that doesn't!

Update: Looks like comments work, BloggerPro set my defaults to Pacific Time and to not publish the RSS feed, so if you've been switched over you might want to switch those as appropriate.

Interesting resource

http://www.melissadata.com/Lookups/index.htm

Free online lookups. There are more lookups on this site then I could possible mention, but it's a handy tool for looking up zip codes, area codes, zip codes within a county, campaign contributions, demographics, etc.

How does that work?

How can the same person in the office leave his PC logged on and Outlook open while he's not even in the office, and then two days later sit in his office all day long without even opening Outlook? What is the thinking process, is there a thinking process? I don't understand..

Of course, I'll have to send him a warning about leaving his PC logged on, or should I just stroll in and send the president an email from his account the next time to teach him a lesson? :)

Do all ISP's suck?

Dave is complaining about Verizon. The "install" of the DSL service branded his browser, changed his homepage and changed all the email server settings. Yeah, Roadrunner's "install" did the same thing, when all it really needed was the gateway IP and DNS servers. In fact, once I got my router pointed at the correct gateway, I didn't need ANY of the other crap that an install would have put on any of my machines!

Actually with dial-up it's even worse. Can you even get a list of local numbers for AOL without using their software (what is it, 150MB now?) to download the list? Let alone actually creating a connection? Nope. I tried to use SBC/Yahoo/Prodigy while on the road and had to install all of their junk, including Yahoo Messenger and Parental Controls, to get it to automatically grab a local number for me. The funny thing is, once you find where they have the access numbers, you can manually create all the local connections you want and uninstall all of their software. You never needed any of that stuff to actually connect to the internet. AOL doesn't work that way. But it could, if it wanted to. How much cheaper could their service be if they just mailed you your username, password, local dialup number, mail server and DNS info and let you enter that to get connected? How much faster would you get connected to the internet if that was all you needed? It takes me all of about 2 minutes to setup a new dialup connection on my laptop, about the same as it takes to add a new machine to my home network and point it to the router as the internet connection. Try getting your "install" CD's done that quickly!

Oh wait, if you don't use their custom software they can't give you their custom content, including all their ads. I guess I'm missing out on that! Poor, poor pitiful me...

Activewords

So I promised Buzz, after some email exchanges, that I'd download a trial version of ActiveWords sometime soon. Now, this particular piece of software has been on my radar since I first saw Scoble using it at Gnomedex I back in 2001. The problem I've had with it, and the reason I've never really bothered to try it out before, is all me. It's actually a nice little tool, that I'm sure would come in handy for a lot of people in a lot of situations but I don't know how I'd use it. I've been using Windows since version 3.1. I've gotten pretty used to using it, and I don't know that I can handle a major change in the way I use my computer! We'll see, I'm going to load it on the laptop, which seems to me the one machine that I usually try and be quicker on, and I'll let you all know after I've been using it for awhile how it works, and whether it makes enough difference to get me to change the way I compute!

It's here

Remember this from Monday? It arrived at my office this afternoon. Let the learning curve begin!

By the way, I'm still looking for those great photography "tips and tricks" websites. Anyone? Bueller?

Trackbacks

If you're into that sort of thing, but use Blogger or some other weblogging tool that doesn't do trackbacks, you have some options. You can use either SimpleTracks or the Stand Alone Trackback Form to manually ping web blogs that do support trackbacks. (links found on Robyn's site, perhaps I'll use this post to test one of them, eh?)

Why I'm not a web designer

Well there are many reasons why I'm not a professional web designer but this is one of them. I noticed something odd going on with Angela's template the other night. Her blog had a link which was malformed. There was a missing quote at the end of the URL she was linking to. In IE it, naturally, caused the link not to show up, but other than that everything looked fine. In Mozilla, however, the entire page just never loaded. Why the two completely different behaviors? I don't know. It was one lousy quote mark, yet I had to go over the entire template with a fine tooth comb to find it, just to get the page to load in Mozilla, even though it worked pretty much OK in IE.

Now since I'm not a professional, if there's something here that doesn't work in one certain browser, I can say, too bad! But, if I were a professional, and I was making an ecommerce site, I couldn't really do that, could I? I'd have to design around all the various ways that IE, Mozilla, Safari, Netscape, etc. handle things. Not only that, but I'd have to design so that those people who have never updated their browsers from IE or Netscape version 3.0 could still use the site. I don't even have that kind of patience.

Email hoax

Have you, or anyone you support gotten the "You have until July 1st to opt-out of having credit bureaus share information with anyone, etc..." email? I've had a couple of people here get it, since it's that time of year again, closing in on July 1. I've been pointing them to this link.

By the way, the new version actually tells you to ignore option 1 when you call, even though that option specifically mentions that email. That might be a hint that this is bogus, huh?

New hobby..

OK, so not really a new hobby, just some new toys for a current hobby, photography. My lovely wife has been in touch with her aunt, who has recently purchased a new camera, and she has agreed to sell Angela her old one, which Angela is buying as my birthday present! So, in a few short days, I will have one of these to play around with, along with a couple of different lenses, etc. I've never had an SLR or a manual focus camera before. It should be a fun learning experience, and should result, in combination with the digital camera and all of it's lenses, in getting a pretty good range of different types of pictures. I'm excited!

Anyone know what the best websites for photography tips and techniques are? I'm sure I'll be doing some online research before the camera gets here.

In other news, the approval for another trip to Gnomedex came down from my boss late on Friday. Looks like I'll be going this year on the company dime again, unless I manage to get a new job in the next month, but that's not looking too likely!
