Issues on other sites

This is just a note to those of you who may wander over here from the Child Abuse site. There's a problem with the MySQL backend right now that prevents me from posting anything new, and you from leaving comments. (A Perl mod somehow isn't installed anymore when it had been working fine until yesterday, go figure?) The host is aware of it and hopefully, it'll be back running soon. The site is stll available and email to that domain is stll working. You just can't leave comments. I am in the process of setting up some forums over there. They aren't a finished product, but you can take a look at the basic shell there and leave comments, if necessary. Thanks!

Note to self

Just noting this here so I can find it later.

Tutorial: Streaming Internet Radio on your Pocket PC

An interesting idea, no doubt. I'd have to do it while the Axim is plugged into the wall though, as the battery life while using the wireless adapter wouldn't allow for extended use, but it's got some possibilities for use around the house. (link via PocketPC Thoughts)

Get your patch here....

CERT warns about Microsoft vulnerability in Windows 2000 and XP, involving a buffer overrun in the Workstation Service. The patch is available here. Now go patch before the worm starts spreading around, mmkay? :)

OPML challenge..

Kent and Eric have answered the call from last week and sent me links to their OPML files. I've imported them to NewsDesk, pruning as I did it to avoid duplication or just feeds that don't apply to me. (By the way, nice feature of NewsDesk to let you add channels by loading an OPML file and choosing which channels from that file to add, but wish I could have done all the categories at once!) I'm now checking out a bunch more feeds, some of which will be added to me permanent OPML file as we go forward. Thanks guys! Who else has some to show me? I must have more information!

No, I'm not a junkie...*L*

Another interesting job-search article

Networking for the introverted

Not that this is becoming a job search blog, it just seems like I've had a run of similarly themed, and interesting things lately. :)

Thanks to the Job Blog for the link.

Start here and read the next few days worth of posts about finding and keeping work. Interesting stuff.

Thanks to Steven for the link.

Office Space..

I have fallen behind in my blog-reading this morning. I could tell you that it was because I had to run our monthly invoices, or because I had a problem monitor upstairs, but the truth be told, none of that took up as much time and mental energy as coming up with something witty to say on 3, count 'em 3, birthday cards as they were passed around the office this morning! I can hardly wait for the cake "gatherings" and sugar buzzes later in the week that go along with those cards. :)

Following the theme..

Dave: "A people hire A people, B people hire C people. Always strive for the most excellence. Never be scared to work with people who are smarter than you. Never be scared to let others be smarter than you"

Daniel: "I'd go one step further. The best thing you can do is to work with folks that are smarter, or have better skills than you. It's by far the fastest way to get better yourself"

Steven: "Besides, working with idiots really sucks. I feel my brain melting away every day."

Don't think I could say any of it any better. I'm certainly keeping this in mind as I continue looking for new employment. I want to work with people who are smart, who I can learn from and who I can respect. Not necessarily tech-smarts either. Just people who excel at their jobs and inspire me to excel at mine!

Internet Explorer to stomp pop-ups

Saw this article over on News.com about how the next Service Pack ofWindows XP is going to include a pop-up blocker ability built-in to Internet Explorer. Interesting for two reasons. One, it's about time! Two, if even IE comes with a pop-up blocker by default, that form of web advertising is dead, offically, although since it's being released as part of an XP service pack, it won't be available to everyone using IE, I assume. Will they make it available to non-XP users? Or are they going to have to go the third-party route and either install Mozilla/Firebird or the Google Toolbar to block their popups?

Security D'ohLTs

Funny, but also informative, article about security "features" that maybe go a bit too far.
