When you work in IT, not only do you have to answer questions about PC's, but sometimes you even get to figure out why the two-letter abbreviation for Quebec that someone wrote as their address, QC, is not what the database will accept as the proper abbreviation for Quebec. You would think that if someone living there abbreviated it QC the database would surely do the same, right? You'd be wrong. It will only accept PQ, which I assume is the French language version of it.
See, I got that PC setup yesterday, and it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, this particular PC didn't have nearly as many "extras" to uninstall. The guy doesn't start until Monday, I knew plenty in advance, enough so that I had time to order and setup the PC, and enough in advance that I could get our ISP to include his account when they were setting up Postini for us. Being that far ahead of the game has to be some sort of record for this place.
It was going amazingly well, right up to where I entered his email information in Outlook. Then, it wasn't going so well. So now I'm doing the rounds with their helpdesk, and their email admins, waiting for them to tell me why the password they sent me is being rejected by the server. Here's hoping we have an actual, working email account before Monday. Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark|

Seriously people..
I understand the allure of being able to watch a DVD while you're riding in a car. Long trips can get a little dull when you're not the driver and concentrating on the road. Technological advances give you a wide range of options to keep yourself entertained as a passenger, and I highly encourage you to use them and take advantage of them. But remember, unless you have tinted windows, every one else on the road will be able to see that porno you're watching!
Getting a bit behind in my tech news today, I'm spending too much time down the hall setting up a PC for our new employee who starts Monday. Seems like it only took me a couple of hours to get an NT box up and configured but it takes me a bit longer to do an XP box. Actually, no, it takes me longer to do a newly purchased PC than it does to reimage one with a new hard drive because of all the "stuff" that comes preinstalled!
Ironically, we get the PC's from CDW this way because they're cheaper than getting workstations directly from the manufacturer without all the extras. We're not big enough to qualify for bulk discounts and we're not "charity" so we don't get any non-profit discounts either! Welcome to the wonderful world of "not-for-profit", all the budget limitations of non-profits with none of the benefits! *L* Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark|

I hadn't thought of that
I've had my fair share of conversations with HR people who are somehow convinced that I'd be more qualified for their IT job if I had finished my Accounting degree instead of quitting college 15 years ago, regardless of the fact that I've been doing exactly what they are looking for someone to do for the last 6, but that's probably another long article sometime when I'm in the mood to rant.
Yesterday I spent the entire day in my office, where it was a toasty 84 degrees. Today, thus far it's gotten up to "only" 82, but it's early and the building has a tendency to warm up a few degrees as the day progresses. Obviously, there's a problem with the heat in this part of the building. What I wouldn't give for a shorts and t-shirt dress policy right about now! What I did over the weekend
I moved most of the photos into the new gallery. (Some of the photos are simply gone, I decided it was time to retire them..)
