I met up with my wife for lunch today. The food was provided free by the East Tennessee State Alumni Association. She's an alum. The team is staying two blocks from my work, which is where they had their pregame pep rally type event this morning. They are in town to take on Cincinnati in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
I'm not an alum but I will be rooting hard for ETSU this afternoon. (In between my busy work projects, of course *wink, wink* *nudge, nudge*) I'll be rooting for them because, well it will make my wife happy if they win, they just gave me a free lunch, being an Ohio State fan, saying "Go Bucks" and rooting against Cincy comes pretty naturally anyway, even if it is "Bucs" (Buccaneers) instead of "Bucks" (Buckeyes), and did I mention the free food, and the happy wife? Yeah, you see what I'm saying...
Jeremy posted today about someone calling him a "whiz kid" and how, at 24, he doesn't really feel like a kid.
Here's the thing, without knowing much about the person who said it, it's hard to tell where the idea comes from. In my office I'm seen by some as a "whiz kid" because I'm good with computers and new technology in a way that other people just don't get. Some of these people assume that because their kids are also good with tech stuff that it must be a generational thing. Also, because I don't wear a suit and tie like they do, and because I tend not to take myself all that seriously all the time, they assume that I'm just a young, whiz kid, computer guy who's not interested in "serious business". I also have only been married, to a 27 year old woman, for about 2 1/2 years and I don't have any kids. That all makes it seem like I'm a "whiz kid" doesn't it?
I'm 35. I worked in banking for 5 years before getting involved in IT. It doesn't get much more "serious business" than that. I was married for 5 years and divorced by the time I was 29. Some people I have worked with as long as a few years have no idea, because it doesn't really fit into how they see me.
Sometimes the "age issue" isn't an actual age issue as much as it's a perception issue. And perception is often in the eye of the beholder.
Later: Reading the comments on Jeremy's post sounds pretty similar to what I was saying last week about the lack of a college degree. I stand by my point though, making an issue of your age or degree when you would otherwise be completely qualified to do the job says more about the recruiter than it says about you, and it probably says more about the corporate environment and why you might want to avoid the place in the first place! I didn't realize
I mean I knew that you could use Bloglines as a way to subscribe to feeds without downloading any software, and a way to check them from anywhere. But what I didn't know is that you can browse around their site and look at what other people are subscribed to. I think I'm going to go find the folks who are subbed to this feed and see what else they've been reading, and then look at who else is reading those and what else they're reading. I think this could become a very time consuming hobby. :) Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark|

I'm at work now with my green on, and a handful of Irish CD's ready to listen to all day. (Flogging Molly, Black 47, Prodigals, Young Dubliners, Seven Nations, etc. Couldn't find the Pogues or Dropkick Murphy's CD's this morning.) Must be St. Patrick's Day! The only thing missing is a Guinness to sip on while I work. Think my boss would go for that? ;)
As most of you know from reading my sites, I very closely identify myself with my Irish heritage. I've spent a lot of time studying Irish history, as well as the history of Irish-Americans. I have a great respect for the people of Ireland and all that they, and the early immigrants to America, have had to overcome. Yet with all the sadness, tragedy and hardships they've had to endure, you'll find no group of people who enjoy everything life has to offer any more than the Irish. Take today to follow their example and enjoy all the good things in your life!
