I bit the bullet and installed SP2 over lunch today, since I had to work through my lunch hour anyway. (Long story)
Everything went well, and nothing really came across as "broken" in any major way. I had to re-enable the Messenger Service, since I do use "net send" across our internal network quite often. The similar, but not the same, MSN messenger reared it's ugly head as part of OE again, so I had to remove that again. I had to add firewall exceptions for Sharpreader and FTP Explorer. I had to tell the Security Center that I would monitor my own anti-virus, since Symantec Corporate Edition 8.x is recognized as installed, but Windows can't access it's status information. Symantec hasn't made a patch available for that version yet to fix that, but the program itself and all the connections across the network work just fine.
All of the normal stuff I do on our network, as far as monitoring, getting AV updates and accessing my PC remotely from elsewhere on the network, works just fine, even with the firewall running.
Unless something major pops up as I use it, I think I'll probably green light this to the other 4 XP machines on our network next week sometime. I'll have to do some minor config changes, but not nearly as much as I originally anticipated.
Saw this today and nodded in a knowing way while I read it:
"Membership management software comes in all shapes and sizes, with most products running as hosted applications. Your organization's specific needs will determine the applications that make the short list. For example, email list management is considered an essential function by most organizations. But depending on the organization, there can be a great variety of additional requirements, from fund raising and donation management through polling, bulletin boards, e-commerce, advertising, and content management.
With so many applications on the market, sifting through the products can be a difficult task."
I have downloaded XP Service Pack 2, but I have a problem. We only have 5 machines running XP here. They are all in use, and all came with OEM licenses for XP. In order to test how SP2 will affect things on a PC, I have to install it on my machine. My machine that acts as the "server" for passing out Symantec updates. My machine that I work on all day long. Installing it is going to put me out of contact with the email system and the rest of our network for the time it takes to install, and then the time it takes to fix whatever is being blocked by the firewall. Instead of having a "test" machine, I'm going to have to use our spare laptop as my main machine while I test on my main workstation. Ugh.
Hmm given a conversation I had yesterday with the guy who does our website design about RSS, this might be a good introduction to point the communications people to, no? I might just have to take a few minutes to read this one and see if it will help.
By the way, yes, our communications people are starting to maybe, sort of, look at using RSS on our website. Yes, that's pretty cool. No I'm not real happy that although I've been telling them about it for over a year, it wasn't until an outside vendor, our web hosting company, brought it up to them that they saw it as a good idea.
More reading on using networking as part of your job search. I've been reading a book about networking and going through all the self-awareness practices myself lately, so this is timely stuff. (BTW, another great use for OneNote, keeping all my notes and exercises on networking and self-awareness together in one section of the program..)
Asa, from mozilla.org sent me an email that both thanked me for linking to and talking about Firefox, and asked me to link to them using a button. I haven't decided on whether I want to start the trend of using a lot of buttons to link to things, I already have enough issues with load-time if blogrolling is slow or the comments aren't working. But if you're interested you can get the details here. Digg this | Post to del.icio.us| FaceBook | Stumble Upon| Google Bookmark|
