MS Office Beta Notes

This is a side-blog where I intend to keep all of my notes from Beta testing new versions of Office. This will keep them all in one place for future reference. I started this with Office 2003, and am bringing it back for the 2007 version. This is not an official Microsoft site, this is just the ramblings of one IT guy.

Outlook 2007 Security

Omar was kind enough to point out a security feature in Outlook that disables user warnings about attachments if it can determine that there's up to date anti-virus running on the machine. I'd love to tell you more about how this works, but my copy of AVG has email scanning disabled, because Outlook 2007 and it don't get along. (I turn on email scanning, every email in my inbox gets all the text stripped the next time I start Outlook. New and existing emails, so long as it's in the inbox, the text gets stripped, with no way to return it.)

So, while it sounds like a nice, user-friendly, feature, I can't really say any more than that. Maybe someday these tools will play nicely together, or I'll find a free AV that does play nicely with Outlook 2007.

Smiley faces

The first time I read about the Smiley Face program for Office 2007 I thought it seemed about the silliest thing I'd ever heard. But then, being the good little blogger I am, I went ahead and downloaded it before I wrote about it.

I've changed my mind. I still think the smile/frown is silly, but it is a very easy way to provide feedback about the beta. I don't have to wait for a crash, or file a bug report, I find a feature I like, or something that doesn't work quite like I'd like, and I click the tray, send a screenshot and include a note. Simple!

Configure your status bar

Eric Hammersley stumbled into a pretty cool feature, the status bar in Word/Excel is configurable. Just right-click the status bar and choose what you want it to show you. Nice.
