MS Office Beta Notes

This is a side-blog where I intend to keep all of my notes from Beta testing new versions of Office. This will keep them all in one place for future reference. I started this with Office 2003, and am bringing it back for the 2007 version. This is not an official Microsoft site, this is just the ramblings of one IT guy.

Office 2007 delayed

By now I'm sure you've seen the news that Microsoft will be delaying the release of Office 2007 until sometime in "early 2007". While I certainly support their decision to not release the software until it's ready, I do have one question that I haven't seen addressed in any of the media announcements today.

Will the expiration date for Beta 2 be moved back as well?

Here's the reason I ask, my copy of the beta is set to expire Feb 1, 2007. After that it will go into "reduced" feature mode. I'm looking at the distinct possibility of having data in formats that won't work in Office 2003, specifically OneNote pages, and not even having the ability to purchase Office 2007 yet in order to continue working with that data and documents. Hopefully we'll see some announcement about that soon.

Test Drive

Jan Tielens pointed today to a Microsoft On-line Test Drive for Office 2007. Want to take a look at the software, see the ribbon for yourself, but don't want to go to all the trouble of downloading and installing the software? There you go.

You will need to load a CITRIX Browser Plug-in and register for a Windows Live ID. (If you have an MSN, or Hotmail you already have a Windows Live ID.)

I tried just now to access the Test Drive. It was full, I was number 23 in the queue, with an estimated 45 minute wait time. So, we'll see how well this works out going forward.
