MS Office Beta Notes

This is a side-blog where I intend to keep all of my notes from Beta testing new versions of Office. This will keep them all in one place for future reference. I started this with Office 2003, and am bringing it back for the 2007 version. This is not an official Microsoft site, this is just the ramblings of one IT guy.

A valid point

OK so I've been busy this week and haven't really spent much time working with the beta, so things have been quiet around here. But I did want to mention that I was showing the new interface to someone at work the other day, and he made a very valid point.

Let's say you're in Word 2003 and you need to go into a menu to use a function real quick. You go into the menu, you select your function, you go back to typing your document, and the formatting stuff is still just one click away on the formatting toolbar.

In 2007, you move from the Home ribbon to, let's say, the Mail ribbon. You select the function you're looking for, and you go back to typing your document. To make a quick formatting change, like bolding, you now have to go back to the Home ribbon to have that icon available to you in one click. (Or you could right-click your text and do the formatting, but the point still remains, it's an extra click to do something that in 2003 is ALWAYS one click because the toolbar is always visible.)

His suggestion is that it would be really nice to have a setting that always takes you back to the Home ribbon when you're typing text into your document, that way your formatting options are always a click away when you're entering text. I think maybe that wouldn't be a bad idea, but I don't know what would be involved in making that possible. What do you think?
