MS Office Beta Notes This is a side-blog where I intend to keep all of my notes from Beta testing new versions of Office. This will keep them all in one place for future reference. I started this with Office 2003, and am bringing it back for the 2007 version. This is not an official Microsoft site, this is just the ramblings of one IT guy.

Putting their words to the test So, if the decision to charge $1.50 for the beta of Office 2007 was a way to offset the bandwidth costs of additional downloads then it stands to reason that if I already have the installation files and only want to get another license key to put them on another machine, I should be able to get that for free, right? Well I went to the Beta site tonight, and that is not the case at all. You're getting charged the "download service fee" before you ever get the option to get a new key or download the software. So maybe Leo LaPorte is right, maybe this is about "keeping the riff-raff out". Update: Given the opportunity to ask Darren Strange, Office Product Manager in the UK, I left a comment on his post about the download charge. His response, which you can read there, is that it's a non-issue because you can use a beta license key on multiple machines. I only have one machine available to load the beta on so I will have to assume that's true. On the other hand, if I didn't keep my license key after downloading, I should be able to get one easily without paying the download fee, but that's just my opinion. Tags: Tuesday, August 01, 2006
Outlook.exe This is a problem I've seen a lot with Outlook 2000, especially at work where the Mailsite document management system add-in to Outlook has a great deal of difficulty closing when you close Outlook, but I really haven't seen it much in 2003. I'm starting to see it a bit with 2007. The problem, of course, is the outlook.exe process continuing to run even after I've closed Outlook. Heck the other day I even got notified of new mail about 20 minutes after I closed Outlook! Here's hoping this is only a temporary problem. It's quite distressing to close Outlook in order to free up some resources (Outlook does tend to tie up a good deal of memory) only to discover those resources haven't been freed up. Two more days That's how much time you have to download the Office 2007 beta before Microsoft starts charging you a buck-fifty for the honor. This is an unbelievably craptacular idea. Seriously, Microsoft can't handle the bandwidth without this charge? Who are they kidding? Tags:
