30 Day Report Card

It’s getting close to the end of my 30 day period to claim my money back from Ready Hosting. I’ve spent 30 days checking out everything they offer, how they’ve dealt with questions I had, how the site has held up, how the email servers have held up, etc. So how are they doing? Well here’s a few nuggets:

According to InternetSeer which checks hourly for outages, there have been none.

I’ve yet to experience anytime where I could not connect to the email server, and all of my email seems to be coming in at a reasonable speed, with a notable exception of Yahoo Group mail, which is an issue with Yahoo’s mail servers, not Ready Hosting’s. All of my online “trouble tickets” were resolved in good time, the longest was slightly over 24 hours, but that was on a weekend. Most have been significantly less. They have a Support Forum, which gets a good response when you post something to it. Their users have put together a mailing list, which RH support people regularly visit and participate in. I’ve had only one complaint about their service, that being that the statistics software they use is horrible, but they were more than happy to switch me out of that and give me the raw logs instead, so I can use whatever log analysis tools I choose. The one time I actually placed a telephone call to tech support, the total time spent on the phone from dialing to “issue resolved”, 18 minutes. I’ve spent twice that long just on hold with other tech support departments, let alone having the issue taken care of!

So it’s not perfect, but for the price, I’m pretty darn happy with it. Unless something terribly bad happens in the next 2-3 days, I won’t be making use of the 30 day refund policy.

Anyone ever used PocketFeed? I’m looking for something that’ll do RSS on my new PocketPC but I also recognize that since I don’t have a WiFi card for it, I’ll be syncing it on the laptop for all the RSS feeds. It might be just as easy to run Amphetadesk on the laptop and copy…

    Linux piracy?

This is starting to get interesting. Is there proprietary Unix code inside of Linux and are all Linux users pirates? On the face of it that seems somewhat ridiculous, but if it’s in the courts, anything’s possible. SCO hasn’t gone public with their evidence, so it’s hard to say for sure what’s going to happen….
