Automatic updates and other problems

Well my users got notified that there were downloads available this morning sure enough. Unfortunately, nothing actually got downloaded, all of them had many dropped or abandoned download attempts in the Windows Update log. Looks like I’ll be spending a bunch of time figuring this one out…

Meanwhile, I also had issue with them all dropping communications with the Symantec Corporate Edition A/V server today. Using the information from this article got me to find the correct firewall exceptions but my question is, how did these PC’s communicate, and get definition files fine before today without creating the exceptions? Because they did, they got def files just last week without any problems.

Go figure!) and helping correct some database…

Thanks to Andy for the pointer to Microsoft’s patch for the Secure Sockets problem that they claimed before wasn’t a big deal. Oh well, at least they did patch it! (Note the Win 2000 version of the patch is not available yet.) Doc has written up his Linux Journal article about his talk at Gnomedex….
