Getting away

Shannon chided me the other day in my own comments when I talked about the tech toys I brought on vacation, suggesting that I was missing the point of a vacation! Not at all Shannon. One, as you can tell, I’m not feeling the need to reply in a timely manner at all. 🙂

Two, to me vacation is about doing what you love. I love traveling and photography. In the 5 days I’ve been traveling I’ve probably taken 400 or so pictures. All the camera equipment, digital and film, along with the laptop helps me do that. The PocketPC provides an easy place to note directions and other things I might need to know in he car. So yes, technology is the thing I do every day, at least certain aspects of it, but it also allows me to do the things I love more efficiently, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that!

Besides, as my very own wife said about me today, my idea of “roughing it” was having to use dial-up last night instead of wi-fi provided by the hotel. She’s right, that’s who I am, and I’m not ashamed of it! 🙂

By the way, today’s agenda included stops in Harpers Ferry and Antietam. Both have a ton of history associated with them. There’s something about walking down the “Bloody Lane“, where 5000 men died in a just a few hours of fighting over a very small road that puts everything else in life in a different perspective, that’s for sure.

I’m talking about the latest version of Acrobat Reader, 7.0. As others have already noted, it is quite an improvement over the speed of 6.0. I just installed it this evening and early impression is that it’s quite a bit quicker. Do be careful to uncheck the addon options if you download from Adobe’s site,…

How many companies that provide hosting or build platforms for other people to communicate can’t afford to defend themselves every time someone posts something that results in litigation? Many will be forced to shut down due to the risk. Many will be targeted specifically in the hope that they will have to shut down.

When that happens, more and more voices will be silenced online. Only the rich can afford to build their platforms and keep lawyers around to defend themselves. Google and Meta will be OK. The rest of us will no longer have any outlets for ourselves. Our opportunities to communicate online with each other will be limited to what Big Tech says we can do.

It’s hard not to assume that is the goal, though.
