Patching catch 22

Prime example last week of why patching is sometimes a whole lot more complicated than it seems to be from the outside.

Tuesday was patch day. For many of us in the Eastern Time Zone, who set Automatic Updates to pick up patches overnight, it’s really Wednesday for all intents and purposes. So Weds. would be the first chance to test a patch. On Thursday I saw the story in my RSS reader about exploits already being out in the wild. Friday, I spotted the story about what the MS patch might actually break if you apply it. So you should have applied it immediately, because if you don’t your users will be vulnerable to existing exploits, but you should test it before you give it to them, because it might break stuff.

Yeah, good luck with that!

Remember back last year when I did a comparison of all the available RSS aggregators at that time. Do you have any idea how many I would have to download and use to do that now? Talk about an exploding market of choices! Well, if you want a somewhat rough idea of some of the…

Random updates on previous posts: The tape drive from Friday turned out to be fine. Had a little scare with static electricity when I went to unplug the drive and plug it back in, but aside from suddenly shutting down our only server with no notice late Friday afternoon, everything was back to normal. The…

  • Trip to the Wilds

We got to take a safari tour of The Wilds yesterday. We had been a few years back, but armed with some better camera equipment and a free pass to the extended safari, we were really excited to get out there and shoot some wildlife photos. It was quite fun. The highlight of the extended…

  • Lack of communication

We didn’t get back from the in-laws until late yesterday evening. With all the wedding stuff and all the various family members to visit with (They are a big, Southern family, there’s a bunch of them, and they all love to tell stories!!) I never even fired up the laptop all weekend. In fact, I…
