My attempt to install Red Hat 8.0 did not go as planned. While the iso downloaded OK, and the MD5 Checksum matched, apparently the CD I burned for Disk 1 was bad. After a number of attempts to install either hung or spit back an error about being unable to read such and such, I ran the media test of the disk (yeah I should have just run that first, lesson learned) and it failed. Guess we’ll burn another copy and try again later in the week.

OK, seems that with the IP tweak blogger is working, and it also seems that the invalid character problem is fixed now too.
