Hurry up, and wait

I’m sitting here, waiting for 5 o’clock to roll around. Not so I can leave for the weekend, but so I can do a firmware upgrade on our server without having to cut it off while other people are working. I’m hoping the simple upgrade will restore the lost communication between the OS and the tape drive, and allow my tape drive to start working again! (The website says it should…) If that happens, then I can go home. If it doesn’t happen, well, I’m not exactly sure. I’ll probably still go home, but I’ll have to work on getting it replaced or something in the very, very near future.

*fingers crossed*

Update: Seems to be working now. I need to seriously push for funding to buy new tapes and replace all of these. Turns out it was having a bad tape in the drive that caused all the mess, once I upgraded, I could extract that and all is normal again.

After my experiences today I’m reconsidering the way I look at password policies. I had to go around and install the new drivers for that Canon copier/printer today on about 15 machines. The install involved installing the Canon LPR port, installing the print driver, restarting, and then entering the Department ID information for the print…

  • The weekend

I need a weekend. Well no, actually, I need to go back to being on vacation. That was fun, this is not. By the way, the big project for the normally slow summer around here has me sitting on the task force to develop an ethics policy for the organization. While I won’t be writing…

Anyway, the search for blogs to link to the Child Abuse blog continues, I added a couple today, but it doesn’t seem like blogging the details of everyday life for abuse survivors or people dealing with depression or other obstacles has caught on quite the way I would have thought. Submissions are always welcome, and…

  • Lengthy conversations

I’ve had these sorts of conversations before, but in a smaller company, like everything else, it’s usually not as frequent an occurrence as it is now. Anyone who’s worked supporting users knows exactly the sort of conversation, and while we all appreciate the fact that the user is curious and wants to learn, we all…

This looks interesting: We’re calling it Dabble, with emphasis on the Db: it’s a database system for dabblers. We’d naturally be happy if professional developers, DBAs, and business analysts find our system useful, but we won’t be satisfied until we have something that works for everyone in the millions of small businesses and teams for…
