Your best advice?

I have been in contact with some one who is interested in starting a tech blog. It’s all very hush-hush for now, since he hasn’t actually started it, but he was asking my best advice as far as getting it out there and having it noticed. My advice was first to write what he knows, and this person has quite a bit of tech knowledge. Second, to link ALOT to other people, generating traffic to their blogs is the best way to get them to notice you. (Let’s face it, we’re all egotistical enough to want to see what someone said about us in the link, right?) Third, visit the blogs of other tech people and leave thoughtful, informed comments, so they get used to seeing you and get an idea that you know what you’re talking about.

My overall strategy would have him work hard at being part of the overall tech-blog community and building from there. What would your advice be? Any “tricks of the trade” you would care to share?

OK, I’ve spent some time here complaining about the various things that my current host isn’t supporting that I’d like to try out, but it’s important that you understand that while these are annoyances, they are hardly my first priorities. At some point this year’s hosting deal will run out and I’ll take a long…

I was invited earlier this week to join the Friends in Tech network. It had been a group of podcasters, many of whom I’ve been a big fan of for a long time, but Kevin Devin asked Andy and I to join and contribute some written content to the FiT group weblog in order to…

First off, yes I know that basically since I mentioned the support forums, THC’s site has been unreachable. It figures, like anything, the second you tell other people about it, it’s gone. 🙂 In other news, it’s an exciting time online, last night the email-to-blog feature for Blogger Pro went live, the Google API was…

  • Since you asked…

Got an email yesterday asking me to think about linking to another blog. This one was actually respectful, nice, personalized, and gave me the impression that at the very least this person read my blog a little bit before asking. That’s always good. My immediate response was still no, but with some caveats. Now that…

  • Hurry up, and wait

I’m sitting here, waiting for 5 o’clock to roll around. Not so I can leave for the weekend, but so I can do a firmware upgrade on our server without having to cut it off while other people are working. I’m hoping the simple upgrade will restore the lost communication between the OS and the…
