Handy tools

Now I’m not going to say that this is my most important tool as an IT guy, but it is one of the things that I’m glad I went ahead and got while I had the chance. It’s my extra 100 foot Ethernet cable! It’s come in handy so many times since I picked it up that I can’t even begin to imagine how I would have accomplished some things without it. Someone wants to do a presentation in a large conference room but not be near the dataport? 100 feet covers the whole room, they hook in anywhere. Need to work on a laptop that’s not starting properly while also using your PC to get some other work done? Run that puppy into the empty office next door, and you’ve got yourself an extra network connection! Need to test a port on a switch and don’t have the real tools to do that? Plug that bad boy into the port and run the other end to a laptop located at a comfy spot, instead of cramped in the wiring closet.

Go out and get yourself one for the holidays. It’s sort of like having that 50 foot extension cord in the garage. You never know when you’re going to need it, but it’s nice to know you have it, just in case! 🙂
