One other experiment

One other experiment I’ve had in mind recently is tied into something that’s not been working correctly anyway. I just sent this email to the folks who had been getting posts by email:

As I’ve mentioned before, something seems to have gone terribly awry
with the topica list in terms of getting emails when I post to the blog.
It’s been nearly a month and no sign of the trouble being fixed, so I’ve
taken matters into my own hands. Actually, this is something I’ve been
wanting to do for awhile. I’ve created a mail list of my own, which all
the blog posts will be directed to, and which subscribers can post their
own thoughts, ideas, comments, etc.

Now, don’t worry, I’m keeping the list in a moderated status, so
anything sent to the list will have to be approved by me first.
Basically I’m trying to walk the fine line between trying something a
little different, and trying to keep it from getting out of hand and
turning people off. We’ll see how it goes. My hope is that as I roll out
the new name next week, that this mail list becomes a place to share
ideas among helpdesk, desktop support or any IT folks who support
end-users on a day-to-day basis.

If you think this list might be something you’d have an interest in joining, or just want to get the blog posts by email, feel free to send an email to blog-subscribe at this domain.

Yesterday was Nature Photography Day, and between a full work day and an evening meeting over at the library, I was in the midst of the concrete jungle downtown. I got an email from Morbus, the mysterious creator of Amphetadesk, offering me the opportunity to preview the Alpha of version 0.93, so that I could give it another chance to stack up in the Freeware News Aggregator Showdown. He disputes my claim that the download was over 4MB and that it ran extremely slow….

We spent the weekend visiting with Angela’s parents, but also got to spend quite a bit of time getting history lessons. On Saturday, despite the 90 plus degree heat, I spent part of the afternoon watching a Civil War skirmish re-enactment. (Yeah, I have the sunburn to show for it.) It was quite fascinating to…

  • One way to help burnout

After all that discussion about burnout among help desk folks, today I had the rare experience of getting to do something different. I spent most of the day driving down to our Cincinnati office to work on a couple of projects, and then driving back to cover the help desk through the end of the…

  • The questions that defy answers.

Questions like, which is more annoying, sending an email to all of staff asking them not to do something, and less than three weeks later finding someone doing that exact thing, or having a request for something given to you, with important information missing, asking for that information, and not getting any response? And, is…

But then again, the downside to the three day weekend is that it takes a day just to get back in the groove in the office! I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing or what I’m supposed to be doing! 🙂 Follow these topics: Uncategorized
