Patching catch 22

Prime example last week of why patching is sometimes a whole lot more complicated than it seems to be from the outside.

Tuesday was patch day. For many of us in the Eastern Time Zone, who set Automatic Updates to pick up patches overnight, it’s really Wednesday for all intents and purposes. So Weds. would be the first chance to test a patch. On Thursday I saw the story in my RSS reader about exploits already being out in the wild. Friday, I spotted the story about what the MS patch might actually break if you apply it. So you should have applied it immediately, because if you don’t your users will be vulnerable to existing exploits, but you should test it before you give it to them, because it might break stuff.

Yeah, good luck with that!

I saw on the news where they think the big blackout started somewhere near Cleveland. Now, as any good Ohio resident can tell you, Cleveland fully deserved it’s nickname (the mistake on the lake) long before this event occurred, but it somehow does seem fitting, doesn’t it? Like any true geek, I couldn’t resist trying out the new Google Reader over the weekend. The short verdict? It’s not a bad first attempt, although it loads a bit slow with my 238 feeds. On the other hand, as my days have gotten busier and busier of late, I’ve come to appreciate more and…

Here’s a few thoughts on the current legal and tech scene: What is the best thing about the internet for us, and the worst for Big Media? There are very few barriers to entry when it comes to publishing online. You can do it for very little $$, it doesn’t take special equipment, or licenses….

Some more random thoughts on workplace monitoring: – Your relationship with your employees shouldn’t be antagonistic. They aren’t “out to get you”. They should have a vested interest in helping the company succeed, after all the company pays their salary too. At the same time understand that what is bad for the company is bad…
