Why filters suck

I couldn’t get to my own child abuse site at the airport the other day. I’m sure they use some sort of filtering software, and I’m sure that it’s the same filtering software used by various schools and libraries. So, while it not being available from the airport is only a minor inconvenience, a kid heading to the library or school to learn about child abuse, or to get help to get out of their own abusive situation is not going to be able to, because some random keyword filter has decided that sites that talk openly about childhood sexual abuse are too dangerous.

  • More aggregators

In the interest of being thorough, (and in providing service to the 4% 2.68% (to be exact) of my site visitors that use a Mac,) a Mac news aggregator freeware program became available. It’s called NetNewsWire Lite 1.0b2, from Brent Simmons. Early reviews are positive but, not having a Mac myself, I can’t really verify…

You may, or may not, have noticed that I haven’t really said anything about any interesting work projects lately. In fact, I’ve barely talked about my job at all. Fact of the matter is, I do work for a political/lobbying organization and this is election season! Granted, we’re involved in state-level politics and not the…

  • Much to get caught up on

For all the good intentions I had, the laptop never even got powered on all weekend. We arrived home safely this evening after spending the weekend in Johnson City, TN. I was having much too much fun visiting Angela’s alma mater, ETSU, and listening to her grandparents tell stories about this family that I’ve married…

A review of those Microtel/Lindows boxes you can get from Walmart. I think this article gets it right on Linux as a home OS. Until there’s a version of Linux that works “out of the box” it’s not a serious threat to Windows on the consumer front. As of right now, if you want to…

  • Alex sees problems ahead

Alex Scoble is using my last post as an example of what he thinks will be a growing problem with wireless gadgets, overcrowded airwaves. If my experience is at all common, I’d say it’s something to be concerned about. I don’t have that many wireless devices in my house going at once. At most a…

    Oh someone gets it!

Dave pointed to something written by Joshua Allen today that talks about the software industry and where their focus should be. I have to admit, it’s a good piece. This line really summarizes my feelings on the whole matter: “And the guy paying for it doesn’t care what language, OS, or database you use as…

  1. That is why I use either SSH tunnels or hamachi to connect to a proxy server running at my house. This means I can pretty much bypass any web filter when I’m out and about, with the addition of having all my traffic encrypted so I don’t have to worry about network sniffers.
