Those ports, they are ‘a no good…

I finally got to dig around in the wiring closet late this morning. Looks like those 4 ports are just dead, nothing to be done for them. There doesn’t seem to be any indication that the other 8 ports on that switch are having any problems, though their own failure may be coming right around the corner too.

Now I’ve got to get the little mapped documentation we did way back in 2000. I’m going to have to figure out the best way to allocate the good Intel ports from both switches so that we don’t have high-priority stuff going through the slower 3Com switches. I should be able to find some lower priority connections (Conference Rooms, empty offices, etc..) and switch them over to the 3Com’s and switch the users who’s connections crapped out on Friday back to a working Intel port. Ideally I’ll be able to get most of the heavy network users off the 520 and on to the 510, in case it really is about to die completely, but at this point I’d settle for having all the actual people who work here on Intel ports.

That will at least buy me some time to go through the long, winding process known as getting purchase approval. (On the other hand, if I get it working OK again, they’ll probably not see any need to buy a new switch, maybe I should have left those people disconnected..*L*)

Taken from a TechDirt posting: “A new study in the UK has come out saying that, while more companies are providing internet access to employees, a smaller percentage are using filtering technology to block out “inappropriate” sites.
