Eureka..

I found the source of the spyware, took me awhile to track it but fantasy baseball message boards came to the rescue. I had a feeling that if the problem existed on that site, and I just wasn’t seeing it, that those fantasy baseball folks would be talking about it. Apparently the ads I got were safe, but they had some ads in their rotation that were downloading spyware.

You can read all about it here and here.

Unfortunately I do not know if the offending ads were popups or banner, and neither does anyone else. They do appear to have used an ActiveX hole. Perhaps even one that doesn’t exist on my machine but did on his? Maybe it’s time to force everyone to use Mozilla or Firefox? Yeah, that’ll happen!

Funny article today, Which Is Buggier – Windows or Linux?. Funny not because it reaches any real conclusions about the question, but funny in that the conclusion it does reach is “it depends”. It depends on what you’re using the PC for, who’s using it, what sort of environment you’re working in, and about a…

Angela’s still unable to publish to her blog. According to her webhost, aka her brother, the accounts for both of their blogs “just log in, run a STOR command and become idle after that and remain connected until the idle timer kicks them off. ” I await word from the folks at Blogger about what’s…

After last week I wanted…

I managed to live through teaching database class this morning. It could have gone better, but I guess I’ll live with it. I simply don’t do this sort of thing often enough to have the sort of grasp of the material and the personalities involved to make it much better than it was. Now, I’m…

  • I have a question

Seeing that, when you call the telephone company, they can identify the number you’re calling from, and all the trouble reports that you’ve made for that number all without the need for human intervention, why can’t they automatically close “no dial tone” trouble reports when you call from the same number you reported the trouble…

  • Fax Laws

Interesting article on the latest twist in the fax laws. I’m pretty torn about this issue. As the IT person for a small business I can tell you that trying to prepare for the day when we can’t fax anyone without their written permission has been burdensome, to the point where we probably won’t do…
