Worst Web Service Ever

I’d forgotten about how gawd-awful the Microsft Windows File Associations web service is. I don’t remember ever getting a file with no program associated and clicked the “click here to get information on the programs needed to open this file” and found actual useful information, most times it’s just like this:

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?Ext=mdi

The sad thing in this particular case that I ran into today is that an MDI file is a Microsoft Document Image file. So Microsoft’s own web service can’t identify an Office 2003 file format. Nice.

Put up my Gnomedex Album. Had a great time at the party tonight. Met and hung out with Tanya and Jerry, who work for a company I promised not to link to yet. They actually learned so much about website development at Gnomedex that they want to go home and redo a bunch of their…

By the way, the outage was not planned, someone screwed up when they were doing some router upgrades. I can’t complain because the email server definitely does seem much faster today than it had been! Besides, I don’t have the time, nor the bandwidth, to tell you about all the times I went to “upgrade”…

I noted last week that it seemed odd that the new definitions I was prompted to download were dated 4 days ago. Silly me, I saw all the news about Firefox version 1.5 being out and went to check it out before I stopped to think about how many extensions wouldn’t work yet. So I’ve spent far too much time trying to track down updates to extensions that the updater within Firefox couldn’t find yet, and then…

  • Linked – ChatGPT in trouble with the EU (again)

This story seems inevitable to me. As the tech world pushes us increasingly into asking an AI chatbot for information instead of looking it up ourselves, and the AI model has incorrect information, where do you get it corrected? When OpenAI was asked to correct or remove this misinformation, they said it was ‘technically impossible’…
