Generative AI is already creating positive change and will continue to do so. It is also making very negative changes as well, with deepfake porn, fake video and audio, scams and disinformation proliferation, etc.
I believe it will change our world, but not in the way AI founders think it will or promise that it will. It will also hurt a lot of people along the way. History will have to decide if it was worth it.
So much of Copilot is work behind the scenes. The $30 per month cost per license is just the icing on the AI cake. The actual cost of ownership is the work involved in Information Governance and Security, planning, training, etc. You should never forget that when integrating any new technology, especially with AI.

Technology, especially M365 technology, changes all the time. It’s vast and complicated, and things get broken when new versions are rolled out. When dealing with eDiscovery, security, privacy, etc., we have to stay on top of those changes to understand new features and ensure the old ones still work the same way.
Don’t assume the old ones will always work the same way. I can tell you from this and plenty of other experiences they often don’t.
If I ask AI to do legal research or provide legal insights, should I assume that the data would be privileged? As the article points out, why would I believe that if no lawyers were involved?
This might seem like a new problem, but it’s an old problem that shows up when trying to do something new.
There is a lack of a strategy for data security and data rot. Too many organizations have punted when deciding what data to keep versus delete and haven’t made the hard decisions about implementing data security internally. Now, they want to use AI, but the AI is accessing all that outdated data and exposing the places where security wasn’t correctly implemented. So, it becomes an IT problem to fix.
