Anniversaries

Yesterday was a big anniversary. I’m sure you’ve heard all about it. It was also a personal anniversary, and while it wasn’t exactly on par with the Wright Brothers in terms of changing the world, it was an important event for me. Yesterday marked 6 years that I’ve been working for this organization. In the midst of personal issues at that time that I’ve documented over there, I started working here. It wasn’t an IT job at the time, it was an office/clerk type job, but I showed some mad PC skills, and was in the right place at the right time when the IT guy left 6 months later, so it wound up being a huge career change for me. It also wound up being the place I would meet my wife, so I guess I can’t complain. I’ve gotten some real-world IT experience and a fabulous marriage out of the deal. That ain’t half bad, is it? 🙂

That being said, I’d still like to move on to something else. I’ve been feeling for quite some time that I’ve gotten everything out of this that I’m going to, and it’s time for some new challenges. There’s a lot to be said for people who stay in the same job for a long time. They are some of the most knowledgeable people I’ve ever met, and they are rock solid dependable. There’s also a lot to be said for not getting stale and stagnant. I’m feeling stale and stagnant. It’s time…

Upgraded the Movable Type and PhpBB installs over on the other site last night. That should help with comment spam and the security problem with PhpBB. Both went off pretty easily. I’d highly recommend them! Follow these topics: Uncategorized

Last week, in the second rule, I talked about how, when management is pushing for you to account for every minute of those 40 hours a week, it’s tempting to give them exactly that, and nothing more. The third rule could also be called, why you shouldn’t do that! No matter what your employer does,…

  • Interesting questions.

The recent news that the RIAA wants ISP’s to start paying a tax for their customers file sharing raises a number of interesting questions. To me, this has always been the “tipping point” of sorts for the whole file-sharing question. It was inevitable that the RIAA and MPAA would go after ISP’s. There’s no cost-effective…

Blogrolling is down. So that’s why there’s no links over there on the right side of your screen. Also, I’ve decided to stop blogging to the Office Beta blog. It’s served it’s purpose as a place to keep notes and links about Office 2003, but now that I’m using it every day both on my…

  • What is a Career Anyway?

The idea that I would leave college knowing what I wanted to do, find a company to dedicate myself to, and spend my adulthood doing that thing is a joke to me. It’s been an unrealistic expectation for a long time. GenZ is just the first generation where we stopped even trying to convince them of it because it’s become too obvious.

  • How Skype works

I saw this post on Network World fusion about Skype and started following the links. It’s pretty interesting reading, especially Mark O’Neill’s post about using Skype behind a NAT firewall. I hadn’t really thought about the P2P aspects of Skype and how being behind a firewall that doesn’t allow incoming TCP or UDP connections could…
