IT tip of the week

From Alex Scoble: Don’t pack rat!

This is a good idea. Here’s an example, I started this job and moved into this office about 6 years ago. The person who held this postion previously, was a big time pack rat. I have never been able to fully divest myself of some of his stuff. I was so new to IT that I figured if he kept it, there must of been a reason. Six years later I still have cables, and disks and manuals that I have never used in my office. Less than I used to, but there are still some lying around. Maybe I’ll actually be rid of all of them by the time I leave here. 🙂

Some interesting stuff, but no closer to a final conclusion of how it got there. The installer ran an XML file to get it’s updates. The XML file instructed it to download 4 files from download.statblaster.com. Those files were MemoryWatcher-b.exe, all_files9.exe, tracker.exe and FixIt.exe. Those in turn come bundled with their own “extras” and in…

  • Palm question

So Angela’s parents were staying with us this weekend, and her dad brought his Palm with him. Now, ordinarily he uses this to sync notes and other things and he hasn’t, in the short time he’s had this one, made any attempts to use the built-in wireless. Since we have wireless running around the house,…

  • That’s harsh!

Scoble gets going again with a bit of a rant against MS for making HTML the default email format in Outlook. Then he tops it off in the next post with this doozy quote: Most people would be quite happy with Plain Text (and those of you who send emails with purple backgrounds shouldn’t be…

  • Mailwasher

So I’m giving Mailwasher a trial run, to see how it handles spam and stuff. My first impression is that it’s fairly cool, just having the ability to bounce emails is going to be fun. But the big functionality, at least to me, is the promised support for Hotmail accounts that’s coming in the next…

  • One for the wife

Just a link for my wife that I spotted over at Scoble’s today, about the changing world of PR in respect to blogs. In fact, I think maybe she should be reading that blog on a regular basis, being the PR person that she is. 🙂 Follow these topics: Uncategorized

  • Integrity, the core of IT

Saw this post over at Day in the Life of an Information Security Investigator about integrity. It, obviously, focuses on working the security/consulting side of things, but I think it’s an important part of any good IT professional’s career. To most people within our organization, our word is all they get to hear about technical…
