OpenOffice

A couple of year’s ago I checked out the Open Office suite in an attempt to see if it would work for everyday use. The big draw back at that time, and still today, was the lack of a database component comparable to Access. I use Access a lot in my job, since it’s part of the Office Suite I use it for handling all kinds of data in areas where we simply don’t have the budget to purchase something “off the shelf”. (Helpdesk, asset tracking, etc.)OpenOffice didn’t have anything comparable and MySQL just didn’t quite fit for what I was looking for.

Thanks to Koozie Notes today though, I see that there is a project in the works called Base that is due to be part of the 2.0 release. This is definitely something to keep an eye on.
