Birthday Notes

Since today was my 39th birthday, and because I’ve ben lax when it comes to any sort of personal news around here lately, I thought it might be a good time for a few notes.

One, the big tech birthday gift was a 30GB iPod. Yes, it’s true, I have to admit that I’ve never owned an iPod before. I realize this made me one of the very few tech geeks in the world without one, but that has been rectified and I really love it. I don’t know why I was hesitant to buy one before! On the other hand I still have no interest in an iPhone. I already have a blackberry through work and just really don’t use a cell phone very often at all. (Ask my wife, she’ll tell you just how much I hate talking on the phone.) Other gifts included some iPod accessories (car charger, travel speakers, iTunes gift cards), a Digital Photography book, an of course, the Black Knight Holy Grail t-shirt.

Due to my birthday being a holiday, the celebrations tend to extend all week. My family got together for lunch at House of Japan up in Dublin, OH on Sunday to celebrate my, and my mother’s birthdays. The food there was awesome as usual.

The office had a birthday celebration yesterday, which included, for some reason, more donuts then I’ve ever seen in one place, along with donut holes, cupcakes, cookies, etc. It was an absolute sugar-fest! We do events like this for everyone’s birthday, and there are like 300 people who work in our building, so you figure out how difficult it is to lose weight working here!

We did go to a nearby park with a great view of downtown last night to see the fireworks. I was underwhlemed this year. The show seemed shorter than it has been in years, and although I liked the greater emphasis on classical music, I missed my James Brown. 🙂

Today was more low-key, with Angela and I taking in a movie, (Licensed to Wed, which wasn’t all that great, but had it’s cute moments) taking an afternoon nap, her making me my favorite dinner, chicken fajitas, and sharing an awesome mini-cake from the French Loaf here in Grandview.

Overall it was a very nice birthday, and it was nice to have a low-key day before we head into a very busy summer and fall. Lots of good stuff to look forward to, I’m sure I’ll be posting a lot about it as well!

  • Who Can Work for You? The Answer to that Question Might Say Everything About Diversity

There’s a lot of talk coming from organizations about their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Too many of them create opportunities that don’t match those words. Office jobs that require workers to be in one place, at the same time, all the time, are inhernetly not as diverse as they could be. Companies that require all of their employees to travel for team events are not as inclusive as they could be. Companies that only hire consultants who will travel to them in peron are not as inclusive as they could be.

Certain jobs require some of these things, but many jobs where the organization requires it can just as easily be done without those requirements. When they do that, they’re not matching what they say about DE&I. They are clearly emphasizing their preferences over their commitment.

    Stopping to Smell the Flowers

Just because work has been crazy and zapped all of my mental energy of late, it was really nice to spend Saturday afternoon/evening just having a little fun again. Took this with the iPhone, and again, I don’t think it compares to the digital SLR, but it’s not shabby either. Follow these topics: Personal, PhotoExport,…
