Email Subscriptions

ByMike McBride December 23, 2009 Reading Time: 1 minute

I have been messing around with some things on my other blogs tonight, and it occurs to me that the current email subscription to this blog, is sort of a pain for me. (Not that anyone really noticed when I quit sending it out, it was never a very popular way to follow the site.)

On the other hand, I realize that Feedburner has an email subscription service that wouldn’t actually require me to do much more than turn it on, so in the interest of making the blog available in any way you could want it, now you can subscribe by email to get all the blog posts on the same day they are posted.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program….

Linked: What Facebook Is Good For, and Why It Can’t Be Good Anymore
ByMike McBride August 12, 2022August 11, 2022 Reading Time: 2 minutes

I’ve moved across the country a couple of times now. I’ve lived in 5 different states and have contacts and friends around the country. (And some outside of the US). Facebook, when it allows me to see someone’s new marriage, their kids, or even the sad things they are living with, provides the best way I’ve found to at least keep in touch in some small way with a lot of those folks.

It’s all the other stuff that makes Facebook terrible.

Linked: How to Use RSS Feeds to Boost Your Productivity
ByMike McBride February 5, 2021February 5, 2021 Reading Time: 2 minutes

RSS is not gone, quite the opposite. Most people, however, don’t use RSS subscriptions like they did in the old Google Reader days, but RSS is running underneath a whole lot of stuff that we all use every day.

But, I also want to point out that there are a TON of good reasons to use an RSS reader now. Maybe more than there were when Google still had one. As it is, we’ve sort of grown into this habit of letting social media inform us. If there’s some topic we want to know about, we’ll follow some accounts and let the algorithm decide for us what we need to see.

Look how well that’s working out.

Linked: How Facebook and Twitter’s Content Moderation Could Open a Legal ‘Pandora’s Box’
ByMike McBride July 9, 2019July 10, 2020 Reading Time: 2 minutes

I would tend to agree with this statement, because it all started with the algorithm, the point where all of these platforms took it upon themselves to decide what to show you. ““The more extensive you make the guidelines, the more selectively you enforce them, the more discretion you start to exercise over your platform,…

Smartphones Are Changing How People See The Internet
ByMike McBride May 26, 2014August 15, 2014 Reading Time: 3 minutes

Reading this latest article about the future of the mobile web, Smartphones: The silent killer of the Web as you know it, I’m struck by the difference between how young people interact with the web, and how us old veterans do it. Young people don’t use tablets because they don’t see them as necessary for…

Comment Problems?
ByMike McBride March 8, 2009July 22, 2015 Reading Time: 1 minute

Since someone sent me an email about not being able to post comments here yesterday, I thought I’d put up a post and see if anyone else had been having problems trying to do the same. It worked just fine when I went to check on it, using Firefox, and I haven’t found any widespread…

Should Companies Have “Ghost” Blogs?
ByMike McBride January 27, 2017January 24, 2017 Reading Time: 2 minutes

Recently, I was contacted by a media company representative. She was looking for someone for a paid blogging opportunity. A client of theirs wanted to hire someone to write blog posts every month about the legal services industry. The posts would appear under their byline however, and I would simply be paid for the work…
