Worth Reading – If You Feel Behind in Your Career, Read This

If I could only pull one line from this excellent piece that summed up my own career, it would be this:

The idea that you will start your career after college, work hard, and move up the career ladder is a complete fiction. That is not normal by any means. If you find yourself in your 30s or 40s switching jobs and not climbing the ladder the way you thought you would, welcome to the club. What you’ve been experiencing is normal. There’s no ladder, it’s the freaking monkey bars out here.

Linked: The Future of Remote Work is the Opposite of Lonely

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there scaring people into thinking that if they don’t get back to the office, they’ll have a very lonely life with no friends. After all, most adults make most of their friends in the workplace nowadays. I know I’ve made plenty myself. But, part of that is because we spend so much time in the office, and nowhere else, that we struggle to maintain any relationships outside of work.

Who has time? Between our 9-10 work day, another hour commuting, and all the extra work we do at night and on weekends, what time are we going to spend with other people?

It doesn’t have to be that way though. Many of us can get our work done from elsewhere, and spend more time in a location that is more conducive to keeping in touch with our friends. That’s the ultimate promise of remote work, and something that employees, and employers, should be considering when we think about what our office policies are going to look like.

The Benefits of the Arts in Business

My point was that as a trainer, I do quite a bit of presenting and public speaking. I also do a fair bit of storytelling, but I didn’t learn that skill in business school or from my technical education. I had to learn those skills later in my professional life. So, I take every opportunity to encourage young people to learn those skills. You may not be looking for a career as a speaker, actor, or Improvisational Comedy, but the skills you learn there will make you stand out in the workplace when it comes time to do a presentation or speak up for your ideas.

I was reminded of this again last week when I listened to my friend and former colleague Laura Prael being interviewed on the Aussie podcast Two Drunk Accountants.
