We also need to talk once again about the mental health of both those who were let go and those who are left behind. The shock of having your life turned upside down on the whim of an organization’s managers is overwhelming. Anyone who has been part of a layoff can tell you that. I went through it, and I know plenty of others who have also done so. It’s a traumatic experience.
I’ve also had the experience of watching people I worked closely with get let go more than once as part of a downsizing. That is also traumatic, and the impact goes much further than being sad the day it happens. You’re also likely adjusting schedules and workloads, taking on more work and stress for the same pay, and feeling guilty because you are at least still getting paid while others are not.
So, if you know someone affected by these layoffs, please reach out. Keep in touch with them as best you can and help keep them connected to a community within their industry.
Maybe we should forgive employees on the ground from doubting the public proclamations of an AI strategy. They’re on the ground, and they’ve heard other proclamations that don’t match what they see with their own eyes.

Pay people enough money so that they can live and stop the mass layoffs every time the stock price dips a little bit. Much of the financial stress people face is because they don’t make enough money to pay for things like childcare and are constantly worried about losing their jobs. If you want to help your employees struggling with stress, anxiety, and burnout, there’s a good place to start.
Generative AI is already creating positive change and will continue to do so. It is also making very negative changes as well, with deepfake porn, fake video and audio, scams and disinformation proliferation, etc.
I believe it will change our world, but not in the way AI founders think it will or promise that it will. It will also hurt a lot of people along the way. History will have to decide if it was worth it.
