BadTrans

BadTrans is out there and looking quite active, at least based on the number of infected emails I’ve seen come bouncing into our network here at work. We did have one person get infected, two days after I posted a warning about it, and instructions on dealing with it, which is quite frustrating. Turns out he wasn’t in the office to get the warning, so he read the warning right after he opened the infected email. I do have Outlook setup to prompt before running or downloading attachments, but I’m guessing he breezed by that prompt. Oh well, it was fairly easy to clean up following the instructions on Symantec’s site. I did, however, have to eat lunch at my desk while I worked on it, which doesn’t do much for my mood. 🙂

    People Don’t Just Want Tools

Saw an article the other day that reminded me of something I rediscover with every training class. “I teach my people on day one…’People don’t want drills, they want holes.’” There’s something very profound in that statement. The reality that “most” people don’t buy tools, or technology, just because they want the technology. They buy…

    Antivirus Action

Interesting, given my recent post about switching to Microsoft Security Essentials, one of our home PC’s was infected with a drive-by download of Antivirus Action. As much as I would have normally lectured my wife about using Internet Explorer, in this case she had to use it to access certain work-related tools, including getting full…

  • I want, I want

So far they are only rumors, or planned products with no pricing, but can I just say the idea of a Windows Home Server and a 1-Terabyte hard drive gets me excited? Or maybe it’s just been a long day and I’m easily excited? It was a very long day, the first day of maternity…

    It’s the Loose Connections

I read a quote in this article about Facebook Friend Collector’s being pretty normal, that really sums up the value in social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook for me. “You can ask somebody, ‘Of your 300 Facebook friends how many are actually friends?’ and people will say, ‘Oh, 30 or 40 or 50,’” Professor…

  • Morning notes

Seems like I get a heck of a lot of traffic to my article on spyware from folks looking for ways to run kazaa or other file sharing services without the ads, or without the tracking. Could it be that you’re actually getting sick of all the intrusiveness? Or are you just worried that someone’s…

  • Reading – Great Free Program Backs Up Your Gmail To Your PC

This is cool if you have no other choice. Personally, I hook up Outlook to sync with gmail and export everything to a PST as my backup, which is a whole lot easier to deal with than having a single text file for every email, but if you don’t have anything else to create an…
