Got the new version of the Restore CD from Compaq, started the restore process, and wham! Crash-ola! Blue Screens, illegal operations, unrecoverable errors. Guess it wasn’t old versions of the cd that caused the crashes, eh? Well after running through various diagnostics for an hour or so with Andy, from Compaq, (who was actually very helpful) we ran into an error in the RAM. So tomorrow, hopefully, I’ll have a new DIMM to put into the machine, and then, maybe, we can restore it back to good working order. I wish I had an extra DIMM to test it with immediately, I really do. Spare parts would be wonderful, I swear! Alas, it’s not to be at this point. Maybe for my next project, I’ll try and find some spare Compaq parts. Anyone got any they want to give away?

One of the comments Phil made in the interview yesterday stuck out to me as I went back and read it again this evening: I stress how important it is that we get all the documentation, that we get our Fact Sheet filled out so when people call about things, we can at least answer…

  • A fifth cause of burnout

I was reminded today of a fifth reason people get burned out doing tech support. Unrealistic expectations. For example, when your users have a problem with technology that isn’t something you support, but which they still expect you to take care of for them. In some cases that can be personal tech like an iPod…

    Help Desk Radio

Speaking of the drive down to Cincinnati, while scanning the dial this morning, I caught a few minutes of a show called “HelpDesk”, on WMUB, a college radio/NPR station in Oxford, OH. Turns out that the call-in show is broadcast on-line on Tuesday mornings, and is also available as a podcast. Could be an interesting…
