Today’s news

MSN Launches AOL Defection Tool -the funny thing here is that it takes something like this to get you out of all the proprietary AOL stuff when you’re an AOLer. Of course you’re trading it for the proprietary MSN stuff, so which is worse? Give me ISP’s without any proprietary software! You can switch those at will without all of these problems! (via Evan)

“Copy-proof” CDs cracked with 99-cent marker pen -if true, this is hysterical! Of course it goes right along with the news over the last few weeks about smart cards being hacked, and biometric devices being fooled using gummy bears, and facial recognition falling flat in Orlando because of the lighting in the airport. There is no technology out there that is going to be foolproof. So how about trying some original ideas instead of treating everyone like a criminal?

Doc was sort of all over the map yesterday. Lots of good stuff, but since I’m only working half a day today, and have some things to get done, I don’t have time to delve into all of it. This will serve as my reminder to look more closely at it tomorrow. 🙂

I’m off to Cincinnati this afternoon for the Midnight Oil show at Bogart’s tonight. You all be good while I’m gone!

I have fallen behind in my blog-reading this morning. I could tell you that it was because I had to run our monthly invoices, or because I had a problem monitor upstairs, but the truth be told, none of that took up as much time and mental energy as coming up with something witty to…

  • Follow ups

Lots of discussion about this post from yesterday going on around various places. Notably Geek News Central and Joy. To follow up Joy’s point, she’s right. I’m not going to sit here and tell you one version of software is better hands down, because it’s all relative. MS stuff is better for me in my…

  • Google Calendar

I saw where Google released a “me too” calendar tool today. I only have one word for them, Intellisync. I keep my calendar in Outlook, so I have it off-line, the only on-line tool I use is Yahoo’s calendar so that my wife can see where I will be at any given time in the…

  • An update

Thanks to Andy for leaving me a comment yesterday about the latest bug fix of Syndirella that specifically fixed the first character only problem with Win 98. Perhaps later today I’ll grab that and get a better idea of how it stacks up. For right now I’m enjoying the extra day of my weekend away…

  • Consumer Reports

Related to the last post, I found a copy of the latest issue of Consumer Reports in the office and took a peek at their ratings. They rate a Gateway number 1, Toshiba 2nd, IBM 3rd and a Dell 4th, with the Dell being the “best buy” because it’s 400-600 dollars cheaper than the others….

  • Weekend traffic observations

Some random thoughts from looking at traffic patterns for this site: Most of you read while you’re working. Not surprisingly, since I mostly blog about work, while I’m working. 🙂 Traffic peaks mid-week generally and drops slightly on Friday before dropping significantly over the weekend. The drop in traffic on weekends is less in the…
