Yeah so I’m a geek!

Last night, I met a friend for drinks and dinner after work. Imagine, if you will, a very hip drinking establishment, right smack dab in the middle of the Arena district of Columbus. (You actually look out on the front entrance to Nationwide Arena from this place.) A bunch of young, single people hanging out doing their young, single people things, waitresses in tight black outfits, TV’s showing ESPN, music playing over top of any TV sound, etc. Over in the corner, there’s two somewhat older, married guys, huddled behind a laptop, looking at a Powerpoint presentation that my friend put together of his pics from a family trip to Indonesia this summer. Yeah I’m very hip and trendy aren’t I? 🙂

Although, I have to admit the pictures were very cool. Very different from anything you would see around here, that’s for sure. On the other hand, I could do without the gaunlet of monkeys that they had to walk past to get to the Hindu shrine. Those guys looked scary.

Then, upon my return home, I found my wife’s day had not gotten better for her, as our internet connection was not working. It turned out to simply be a matter of resetting the router, so I got to be her hero for the evening. You see, there are times when being a geek is a very good thing!

Random updates on previous posts: The tape drive from Friday turned out to be fine. The…

  • I work too hard

Picture this, it’s 11:45PM, the wife is soundly sleeping, I’m well on my way, when I hear my pager. It’s the work voice mail system paging me to let me know someone left me a voice mail. Someone leaving me a voice mail at 11:45PM cannot possibly be a good thing. I get up, go…

  • Layoffs in IT

I was thinking something on the drive to work today about how electricity is sort of like IT. Nobody really notices the power companies until the power goes out. IT is very similar, no one really knows what goes on “down there” nor do they really understand what it is that we do, but lawdy…

  • New version of AVG-Free

Like I didn’t have enough to do after spending 5-days almost entirely disconnected from the Internet, and having work projects pile up on me while we were gone, when I finally did connect my laptop to the Internet this morning, I was prompted about version 7.5 of Grisoft’s free anti-virus tool, and informed that the…

Here’s the situation. We have 3 scanners in the office, hooked to 3 machines. Two are setup in offices of people who use them quite often, and get the scanning done for just about all of the office. The third is in my office, and rarely ever gets used. (I’m not even clear on why…
