New Wireless Router

As I mentioned in the comment to my previous post about our wireless access point going kaput, I did get a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router , and after some initial difficulty getting it setup as just an access point, not a router it’s been working really well ever since.

At our house there are a number of things that can cause interference with a wireless network, both within and beyond our control. I won’t get into naming them all here, but suffice it to say that we’re in an area with a few wireless networks, cordless phones, and various other signals in easy reach of our living room.

Given that, I’ve simply accepted that sometimes we were going to have some struggles with wireless connections. Granted, those struggles had gotten much, much worse in the weeks prior to the access point losing power, and that may very well have been an indication that trouble was on the horizon. However, in the couple of weeks I’ve had the WRT54G in place and running, there have been no problems at all with interference, including when my wife was on the cordless phone the other night, which used to be impossible.

In short, I love this piece of equipment. 🙂

WordPress Sites Being Used in DDOS Attack?

This article caught my interest: Just in the course of a few hours, over 162,000 different and legitimate WordPress sites tried to attack his site. We would likely have detected a lot more sites, but we decided we had seen enough and blocked the requests at the edge firewall, mostly to avoid filling the logs…

“Such concerns didn’t strike me as farfetched, but I was reluctant to air them in mixed company. I knew that many of my fellow citizens took comfort in their own banality: You live a boring life and feel you have nothing to fear from those on high. But how could you anticipate the ways in…

    Admin Rights

Saw this in Support Alert today, and thought it’s worth publicizing. As much as the common security advice is not to run as Admin, there are a number of tools that simply don’t work without the Admin rights. It’s frustrating. Programs That Won’t Run in a Limited User AccountWorking with a Windows limited users account…

I’ve mentioned before how much I enjoy using OneNote on my home machine and laptop. It’s a great tool for keeping track of all kinds of information in one place. Unfortunately, the one place I’ve really seen a need for this lately, is at work, where OneNote is not available to me. So a couple…
