Utilities I’ve used in the past week

Things have been crazy, crazy busy, but in the midst of it all, it occurred to me that instead of trying to piece together some coherent thoughts from my addled brain, I’d share a few utilities I’ve found ever so useful in the last few days.

Diskdigger:

DiskDigger can recover files from any type of media that your computer can read. This includes USB flash drives, memory cards (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc), and of course your hard drive. The types of files that it recovers include photos, videos, music, documents, and many other formats.

PstPassword:

PstPassword is a small utility that recover lost password of Outlook .PST (Personal Folders) file.

WordPress for iPhone: self-explanatory, really.

Malware Bytes: -anti-malware tool

I won’t get into the details of why I needed to use these this past week, just know that I did use each of these, and they worked as advertised!

    Stopping to Smell the Flowers

Just because work has been crazy and zapped all of my mental energy of late, it was really nice to spend Saturday afternoon/evening just having a little fun again. Took this with the iPhone, and again, I don’t think it compares to the digital SLR, but it’s not shabby either. Follow these topics: Personal, PhotoExport,…

  • Pulling my hair out

I spent just about all of my work day troubleshooting issues with a new PC I just setup last week and it’s driving me crazy! This is a new OEM of Windows XP Pro, updated to SP2, running Office 2000. There were two issues, both of which involved spooling processes and timeouts. One was sending…

  • Gsyncit, so far so good

I’ve got an evaluation copy of Gsyncit running on my laptop right now. It’s a tool that easily syncs your Outlook calendar with your Google Calendar. You can use the evaluation edition for as long as you like, but that means putting up with a nag screen that takes about 15 seconds when you open…

    Little Mac Help?

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on using a projector with a Macbook Pro? I’ve done it a couple of times, and have managed to get what I need each time, but I suspect it’s been a lot more aggravating than it should have been. I haven’t found anything like the Fn-F8 toggle on…

    Listen to Your Trainer

OK, granted, I am a trainer by profession, and when I see something like Seth Godin’s piece about listening better, I want to scream “Amen!”. Let’s take a sample: The hardest step in better listening is the first one: do it on purpose. Make the effort to actually be good at it. Don’t worry so…

  • Not the best layout

I wonder if anyone else ever has this problem. You go onsite to do some tech support at a conference or other speaking engagement, they’ve been nice enough to let you know that they have the projector, screen and all that already, you just need to bring your laptop and plug in, but when you…

  1. I used PstPassword just last week, actually. I hadn't used it before and couldn't understand how it worked, but it did so I wasn't going to question it. I actually keep a flash drive on me at all times with all sorts of portable apps, including several things from NirSoft and just about everything from Sysinternals.
