I’ve talked frequently about the need to network and build relationships within your own organization. I’ve posited that it will make your life easier if the people you support see you as one of “us”, as opposed to one of “them”, and the best way to do that is be friendly with the people you work with. Now, a study by CNN Money shows it also increases the likelihood of getting a promotion.

Apply the same logic to the preference of where to work. If a survey says 51% of people think hybrid is a good idea, then it is true that hybrid is the option that would be preferable to most people. Are your employees in that 51% or the other 49%? How about you talk to them instead of relying on some study that tells you what most employees want? Your team might not be “most” people. They each have individual values and priorities. Do you know what they are?
Alex sees the writing on the wall; the idea that anyone can retire at 65 in the near future is a joke. That future existed when pensions were common; homeownership early in adulthood was achievable, and you could work for the same company doing very similar work for over 40 years.
We don’t have any of that now. What we do have is a system that was designed for that, though, and a system that refuses to change with the times.

Great managers are developed by great managers. If you look around your workplace and don’t see great management, senior leaders might want to look at learning how to be great managers and leading by example. If your workplace, like many others, would be better off with far fewer middle managers, it’s likely because there is too much bad management happening. So much, in fact, that it might be better to not have middle managers at all.
