I completely disagree with this take:
First, Facebook should charge users a nominal $5-a-month fee. You can give seniors a discount so you don’t lose them.
That’s a misreading of what Facebook is. Netflix, Amazon and Apple charge users to consume content created for those networks. The value to users of Facebook is the content created and shared by other users. Without those other people, there’s no value to Facebook, or Twitter for that matter. Charging users would immediately negate the network effect that makes social networks what they are, your connections. If enough of them leave, there’s no reason to be there, let alone pay for it.
