Worth Reading – Most managers can’t participate in training because they don’t have time, study shows
This is dumb.
Although most organizations offer a manager development program, more than 90% say they lack time to participate, according to a Sept. 2 report from the Association for Talent Development.
In addition, 63% said being a manager is more difficult than they anticipated, and more than half said their organization provided little or no training to prepare, the report found.

When I worked in customer training, it shocked me when I’d have someone attending class but spending most of their time replying to emails or pulling up their laptop on the side to get work done. Over the years, I’ve become less shocked by it, but I still make note of when it happens. I consider it a giant red flag and am likely to avoid working for this company in the future.
Why?
Those companies paid a not-insignificant amount of money to send their employee to training. Most of them were sent to training as part of gaining a certification that the company would likely brag about to its customers. This was likely a goal that was part of the employee’s objectives, used to measure their performance. Yet, the manager was actively undermining their ability to learn and achieve that goal by expecting them to also keep up with work.
When you don’t provide management training, or have it available but never give the new manager time to attend, what do you think happens to their performance as a manager? Again, you’ve undermined them. You’ve put them in a position to fail.
