Does Anyone Believe Meta Will Do This Well?

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Meta Glasses, mostly because the people using them to video-record every interaction they have with people, mostly women, and then post them online for kicks and giggles are creepy as hell.

So, this probably isn’t much of a surprise:

What I found noteworthy in the “I literally laughed out loud” way was this quote from Adam Mosseri, the founder of Instagram, who said this after feverishly pointing out that the glasses have a light that indicates they are recording, as if everyone could physically leave every interaction before being filmed:

“Plus, if you’re posting content that is taking advantage of people and harassing them, like a lot of these pickup line kind of videos that we’ve heard of and seen, then we’re going to take the content down.

“We don’t want people to be surreptitiously taking videos of other people and harassing them and then posting them on our platform. So we’re trying to fight that every way we can.”

This is the same company that has been accused of serving beauty ads to young women after it detected that they had deleted a selfie from their phones, and also of selling that to advertisers as a business model.

The same company that refuses to take down obviously dangerous and false information in the interest of “free speech absolutism” wants us to believe that it will protect people from online harassment now, when it’s content created with their glasses specifically to stalk and harass them?

Sorry, Adam, you don’t get that kind of benefit of the doubt.
