How Many Managers Can’t Give Feedback?

According to this recent Mid-Year Workplace Trends report, the results for whether your manager can provide feedback and coaching well are kind of bleak:

  • 56% rated manager coaching and feedback capability 5/10 or lower. Managers are expected to coach, develop talent, lead change, and keep teams aligned. As responsibilities grow, manager effectiveness becomes harder to sustain.

Coaching and developing talent is under pressure in two ways, in my opinion:

  1. New managers don’t get any training in these skills.
  2. All managers are underwater when it comes to having the time to do this work.

Far too many managers are promoted, but still doing their old job. They’re really just team leads but expected to act as managers without the resources to do so. When you’re in a situation where you’re drowning like that, talent development is the last thing on your mind, and in the case of more than half of the workers surveyed, it shows.
