Worth Reading – AI Note-Taking Apps Are Violating User Privacy
Honestly, the first time I saw an ad for Granola, I immediately thought, “This seems illegal and is going to get someone in a lot of trouble”:
Unlike most AI note-takers, which show up as bots that have to be visibly admitted into the video call, Granola is built around invisibility. According to the app’s own marketing copy, the app’s competitive advantage is it runs locally on a user’s device so that “other people in the room won’t know it’s there.” Lawyers fighting for the plaintiff say that this is the textbook definition of an illegal wiretap.

Not every state requires both parties of a call to be aware of recording, but some do, and setting aside the legality, it’s just creepy and likely unethical for lawyers to be out there doing that with client calls.
And seriously, if you’re doing it with meetings with your employees, you’re gross.
At some point, someone in development at Granola should have considered how this was going to be used, and given the way they market it, maybe they did, and thought it sounded like a good business plan. Like many tech companies these days, privacy isn’t a thing.
