Worth Reading – AI is Forcing Organisations to ask Data Governance questions they have avoided for years

I’m living this in the legal industry today, and I don’t think we are alone:

One of the more striking developments over the past year has been how quickly discussions about AI become discussions about data governance. An organisation may start by exploring how employees can use Copilot more effectively, only to find itself debating which definition of a business term should be treated as authoritative. A workshop intended to focus on automation can quickly become a conversation about data ownership. Questions about whether users can trust AI-generated responses often lead directly to questions about where underlying information originated and how it is managed.

These are not new concerns. Governance professionals have been dealing with them for decades. The difference is that they are no longer confined to governance programmes.

Dr. Holt hits on something huge here. People in IG and related fields (Hello, my old eDiscovery friends!) have been warning for years about the risk of keeping everything forever without governance. But unless it hits them as a data breach or litigation, many people can ignore it and suffer no real harm.

I would argue that they were lucky more than anything else, but I digress.

AI has turned that potential risk into a day-to-day reality now. Keeping everything means that outdated information will be surfaced by AI. That chatbot will confidently tell you something is 100% true because it sees it written right there in your documents. Never mind that the document is 25 years old. It will surface information sitting in a public folder that should be private. It will expose inconsistencies across departments, and it will base its answers on data that shouldn’t be included in the analysis, simply because the user has access to it.

That’s exactly why IG professionals have been telling us to clean up our data. Too many people didn’t, and as mentioned in the link above, every AI meeting ends up being about governance.

We did our future selves a disservice by ignoring these questions for years, and now we have to either pay the piper or increase the risk exponentially by letting AI loose on this data.
