How not to start off a long weekend

Well I just discovered that my ICQ account has been hacked and I can no longer access it. So for the time being, ignore the ICQ information, and don’t try to contact me there.

On top of that, my return to work on Weds. is going to be met by yet another replacement hard drive to swap out. Given the location of the three offices that this has happened to, and the relative humidity of that area of the building, I’m working on getting our building management people to seriously do something about that. I was sweating just sitting in that office today. I don’t sweat in my office, even with the heat being generated by the server.

We’re off right after work today and while I had hoped to be doing some blogging over the next 4 days, the internet connection situation is up in the air once we reach Gatlinburg. So if I don’t have a net connection, I’ll fill you all in on Weds. or so.

In the meantime, you’re welcome to use the comments and the fourms to continue your discussions!

Well I promised more later, and boy is it later… 🙂 After lunch we were treated to a talk by Steve Gibson. Now to say that Steve has a different perspective that Rob Rosenberger would be putting in mildly. Some of Steve’s main points: The internet, globally is very robust and impossible to bring down,…

We spent the past weekend having an early Christmas with the in-laws. My father-in-law has recently had his Palm die on him and was given a Toshiba e310 that his son had and wasn’t using to replace it. I knew he was having some problems with it, and went in thinking that I was probably…

  • Do You Know Why Employees Leave? Do You Know Why They Stay?

My point isn’t to toot my own horn. It’s to give you a concrete example of what a difference sitting and talking to your employees can make in terms of understanding what works for them, or doesn’t work for them in the workplace. A survey has a purpose, especially when you realize that meeting one on one with all of your employees doesn’t scale very far. If you really want to know what’s going on, though, don’t wait for someone to leave so you conduct an exit interview. A stay interview might prevent them from leaving in the first place.

And for god’s sake, conduct exit interviews too, and be willing to act on them. These people are telling you what went wrong, why wouldn’t you want to know that?

  • Sundays are good!

Sundays are good, after being up until 3AM learning and playing with some Visual Basic stuff, my wife brought me some breakfast in bad around 10, and then let me go back to sleep for a little while. Excellent! Eventually we did make it out of the house for a trip down to the used…

  • It makes my head spin..

Yesterday I spent probably two hours discussing a change that we’re doing at work. In layman’s terms, one of our employees is moving into a newly created position with another entity that is a “partner” of ours. He’ll work for them, but still be our employee, work out of our offices and have an email…
