Election fatigue

You may, or may not, have noticed that I haven’t really said anything about any interesting work projects lately. In fact, I’ve barely talked about my job at all.

Fact of the matter is, I do work for a political/lobbying organization and this is election season! Granted, we’re involved in state-level politics and not the presidential election, but it’s still an insanely busy time around here. Most of my time is taken up simply making sure everyone has the right tools (equipment and/or information) to do what they need to do. It doesn’t really make for great blogging, especially given my desire to not name names when it comes to where I work.

That being said, we’re in for many changes, I think, right after the election. We’ve got two people leaving, some jobs transitioning, requiring some re-training of end-users for different functions, and some equipment upgrades on the horizon. Only trouble is, we have to get through the election first. I was telling Angela just last night that the concept that there are things on our schedule for “after the election” is completely unfathomable to me. Between work, reading the news, seeing all the political ads on TV, billboards, yard signs, etc. I find it hard to believe that there will ever be a time when this is done!

If you truly want to be an organization that supports learning, you need to put your money where your mouth is and figure out how to incentivize individual and team learning opportunities. Taking the time to learn and the time to train others, shouldn’t come at a cost to the performance review of the people who want to learn. They should be the people you want to reward and hang on to. They are the ones who will be pivotal in helping you navigate change, but they can only do that if they still work for you. Making them work double-time to make up for “lost productivity” when they try to be part of the learning culture you claim to want won’t encourage them to hang around.

Spent most of today in bed, again. I finally got hungry and ate something around 5 this afternoon, that seemed to go fairly well and I’ve spent the rest of the evening getting hungry after not really keeping anything down for almost two days. But since our ISP did their “upgrade” last week, we’ve had a connection outage of anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour every day. Twice, so far, today! Somehow, I think maybe they missed on the “increased stability” they were going for, don’t you? Gee I’m in an awfully complaint-centered mood today, aren’t I?…
