Important Ubuntu lesson

Remember how I was going to be playing around with that Ubuntu VMware set-up on the VMware player? Well today I discovered that VMWare player will support wireless connections, which I could have sworn I read somewhere that it didn’t. But that’s not the main point I have. Today, after discovering that, I was trying to update to Firefox 1.5, which isn’t available yet in any of the repositories. I got it installed and everything seemed fine, but it would never start.

After much Googling, I came acros this page, and this set of instructions:

Step 1: Use synaptic package manager and get libstdc++5. If you already have it, go to step 2.

Sure enough, that package was not installed on the Ubuntu 5.10 Virtual Machine that you get from the VMPlayer community. Make sure you go get it.

I promised to keep you all updated on the great documentation project of 2005. I’ve decided to break the documentation of job duties into time periods. Ahh finally someone has come up with a service that will let you: “get an instant summary report on how likely it is that your marketing message or email newsletter will get stopped by the mail servers behind Sp@mAssassin and similar Bayesian-style filters.” I’m going to have to check out the ContentChecker and see if…

You know that scene in The Godfather 3 where Michael mourns about how “I thought I was out, but they keep dragging me back in…” (paraphrased greatly!)? That pretty much sums up my week. Annual Meeting being over should have marked a return to normal work priorities, and little less stress. Unfortunately, real life doesn’t…

    Personal Tech update

Just an update on some things I’ve been doing. Angela already wrote about the Roomba, so I’ll leave that alone, other than to say, as a gadget type of guy, I’m fascinated by watching it work. (Of course, the whole point is that it works while you’re doing something else, so I need to break…

  • Long day ahead

I’ve got a ton of work to do today, between a new employee, a new machine and today being the first working day of March, meaning month-end reporting, I’m sure I’ll be tied up most of the day with work. So if you don’t hear from me later, that’s why! Before I go though, since…
