While I’m not necessarily convinced that this statistic would play out over a larger study, I also know that I’ve been recruited twice in the last couple of years, by people who I’ve met as either a direct, or indirect result of having a blog. Sadly, most managers just don’t know how to do this. We’ve lived in a world where hard work = hours worked for so long that we don’t know how to do anything else, even though it was also never really true. There have always been people who “work” long hours just to look good without ever really getting anything done, and others who get work done very efficiently and see no reason to sit at their desk longer and play that game. (And everything in between these two extremes!)
What we haven’t done in many cases is figure out better ways to measure who is getting actual work done, because sometimes that’s hard to do.

It grabbed my attention because it’s something I hear quite often, often in combination with the other, more obvious, “complaint” about working long hours.
And yes, the word complaint is in quotes because we all know that when we mention the hours or the back-to-back meetings, we complain about it, but we are really bragging about how busy we are for one simple reason. Busy people are in demand, they are important.
But, are they really?
This further emphasizes that living your life for work is not worth it in the end. How many similar stories are out there? How many people were mid-project or working late evenings on important deals and were let go the next day?
