Microsoft Buying Wunderlist

It always makes me a bit nervous when one of the Online Services That Help Me Keep Life Straight gets gobbled up, excuse me, “acquired”, by one of the large tech behemoths. How much will the experience change, what features will be removed to accommodate the new integration into the company’s existing products, what new features will be added? Obviously, everyone is saying the right things as of now, and the Wunderlist team is remaining in place, but given what’s happened with some other popular apps, you’ll excuse me if I have some reservations.

If you haven’t tried Wunderlist, and you’re a list maker, you should definitely do so, even if it is a Microsoft tool now.

What favorite apps of yours have been acquired? Has it been a good or a bad thing?

Is the Internet Broken, or are We Broken?
ByMike McBride May 24, 2017May 23, 2017 Reading Time: 2 minutes

I read this recent quote from an article about Ev Williams this week and something seemed oddly familiar about it: The trouble with the internet, Mr. Williams says, is that it rewards extremes. Say you’re driving down the road and see a car crash. Of course you look. Everyone looks. The internet interprets behavior like…

Linked – Training? What training? Workers’ lack of cybersecurity awareness is putting the business at risk
ByMike McBride March 16, 2016March 15, 2016 Reading Time: 1 minute

This represents a major cause for concern, especially given that recent research by PwC suggests that three-quarters of large organisations suffered a staff-related security…

Should have known
ByMike McBride January 23, 2007July 19, 2014 Reading Time: 2 minutes

When I got caught by a train on the way to work, and the gate on my side of the road didn’t go back up after the train went by, I should have known it was not going to be a good day. Sure enough, my boss was out sick, leaving a bunch of extra…

IT People Fix Things
ByMike McBride September 5, 2012July 22, 2015 Reading Time: 5 minutes

We can’t help it. It’s in our nature to fix things that are broken. That’s what attracted us to working with technology in the first place. More than likely we started out troubleshooting, seeing how things worked and understanding what was wrong so that we could fix it, or maybe even improve upon it. That’s…

ByMike McBride November 18, 2017November 17, 2017 Reading Time: 1 minute

This is an obvious use of AI in law, allowing clients the ability to respond to questions and get legal documents like a will without the much higher expense of a lawyer’s time. This, is the part that jumped out at me though: “Much of the work these bots, and AI technology in general, do…
